Confined Space

Confined space entry is one of the most hazardous tasks performed in the utility and construction industries. This hands-on course equips participants with the knowledge and practical skills needed to safely identify, evaluate, and enter confined spaces while maintaining OSHA compliance. Through classroom instruction and field-based exercises, students learn hazard recognition, atmospheric testing, permit requirements, PPE selection, entry procedures, and rescue and retrieval operation

Description

Confined space hazards present significant risks to workers in utility, telecommunications, construction, and industrial environments. This comprehensive training course provides participants with the knowledge and hands-on experience required to safely work in and around confined spaces while meeting OSHA regulatory requirements.

Delivered on SLTC's campus through a combination of classroom instruction and practical field exercises, the course covers the identification and classification of confined spaces, including permit-required and non-permit-required spaces. Participants will gain an understanding of personnel responsibilities, applicable regulations, hazard recognition, atmospheric monitoring, entry permits, equipment requirements, safe entry and exit procedures, and rescue versus retrieval operations.

Hands-on training allows students to inspect and prepare a confined space, complete permit documentation, perform atmospheric testing, utilize proper personal protective equipment (PPE), safely conduct entry and exit procedures, and execute rescue and retrieval techniques in realistic training scenarios.

Upon completion, participants will have the skills and confidence to recognize confined space hazards, follow established safety procedures, and perform confined space work safely and effectively. Students will complete a written review, a 20-question examination, and a practical skills evaluation demonstrating proper confined space entry, exit, and rescue procedures.

Key Topics Include:

  • Confined space identification and classification
  • Permit-required vs. non-permit-required confined spaces
  • OSHA regulations and compliance requirements
  • Hazard recognition and risk assessment
  • Atmospheric testing and monitoring
  • Entry permits and documentation
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Safe entry and exit procedures
  • Rescue and retrieval operations
  • Personnel roles and responsibilities

This course is ideal for utility, telecommunications, construction, and industrial personnel who may be required to enter or work around confined spaces as part of their job duties.
